The Trump administration is reportedly planning to implement a ban on Venezuelan citizens entering the U.S. starting March 21 by adding Venezuela to a “red list” of countries considered a threat to U.S. national security.
This measure could affect:
Major League Baseball (MLB) personnel in Venezuela
The Venezuelan national baseball team (La Vinotinto)
The Venezuelan Professional Baseball League teams (known as LVBP)
Brad Bernstein, Managing Partner at Spar & Bernstein, quoted by El Emergente, shared his opinion on the potential impact of the ban, explaining there could be an exception for professional athletes with O-1 visas.
“The real question is what will happen to those who don’t have star status yet,” Bernstein said. “Many of them apply for P-1 visas, but those don’t have the prestige of the O-1.”
“If the ban applies to new visa applications without exception for professional athletes, that could seriously impact the ability of Venezuelan baseball players to continue their careers in the minors and in the United States,” Bernstein added.
The ban could also affect Venezuelan players already in the U.S., as they could be unable to re-enter the country after traveling to Canada for baseball-related events.
